Neither is universally "better" — they're built for different depths. Sofwave delivers ultrasound at a fixed 1.5 mm mid-dermal depth with integrated cooling, making it faster and notably more comfortable. Ultherapy reaches deeper (up to 4.5 mm into the SMAS layer) for a stronger structural lift, but with more discomfort. For mild-to-moderate laxity, lines, and patients who want a comfortable experience, Sofwave is often the better fit. For deep jowls or a heavy brow needing a true deep lift, Ultherapy reaches further. Is Sofwave HIFU or a laser?
Neither, exactly. Sofwave is an ultrasound device — but not the same as traditional HIFU. HIFU (like Ultherapy) uses focused ultrasound that converges energy at a deep point. Sofwave uses SUPERB — Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam technology, delivering seven parallel beams at a consistent 1.5 mm depth. It is not a laser at all — lasers use light energy, while Sofwave uses sound-wave energy, which is why Sofwave is colour-blind and safe for all skin tones including darker Asian skin.
Does Sofwave cause fat loss?
No. Sofwave's ultrasound energy is delivered at a fixed 1.5 mm depth in the mid-dermis — deliberately above the fat layer. Its purpose is to heat collagen for skin tightening, not to affect fat. This shallow, precise depth is actually one of Sofwave's safety advantages over deeper devices: there is no risk of the facial fat-pad loss occasionally associated with overly aggressive deep-energy treatments. Sofwave tightens skin without changing facial volume.
