Quick Answer
Micro-dose neurotoxin (sometimes called micro-tox or micro-Botox) is a technique in which very small, diluted amounts of botulinum toxin — such as Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin, all Health Canada–licensed — are injected superficially across the skin rather than deeply into muscle. It suits adults seeking subtle skin-quality improvements: reduced pore appearance, finer texture, and mild oil control, without significant muscle relaxation. At ID Cosmetic Clinic in Markham and Toronto, this treatment is personally performed by Dr. Dan Xu, M.D., CCFP. Results typically emerge within 7–14 days; maintenance sessions are generally recommended every 3–4 months.

Why Choose ID Cosmetic Clinic for Micro-Dose Neurotoxin Treatment in Toronto
Baby Botox is not”Reduced dosing”that simple — rather, it isDosage + injection points + depth + patient aesthetic goalsa four-dimensional recalculation.
Micro-Dose Botox Specialist for Asian Faces
Dr. Xu recognizes that facial muscle strength in Asian patients is generally lower than in Western patients, meaning a standard 20 U glabellar dose is often excessive for Asian faces. Micro-dose treatment on Asian faces is almost”Original treatment plan”rather than”Specialized treatment plan”.
MD Codes Micro-dose protocol
Dr. Xu follows the MD Codes micro-dosing protocol — for example, 4–8 U in the glabellar area rather than the standard 20 U — achieving a naturally youthful result through precise placement combined with ultra-low doses. This is a trained, standardized technique, not”Dose-sparing”a compromise.
Allergan North America Trainer
As an Allergan/AbbVie North America Official Trainer, Dr. Xu has an in-depth understanding of the non-linear characteristics of the Botox® dose-response curve at low dose ranges, as well as how to accurately target muscle receptors with micro-doses as small as 1–2 units.
80,000 treatment areas of experience
With over 80,000 cumulative injection procedures, Dr. Xu’s default approach for first-time Asian patients is micro-dose treatment — a defining standard of her clinic”90%+ client retention rate”one of the core reasons for this.
Pre-mirror expression assessment: mandatory step
Before every micro-dose Botox treatment, all clients are required to complete a pre-mirror video recording of 8 facial expressions — frowning, raising brows, smiling, laughing, pursing lips, wrinkling the nose, pouting, and resting — to establish a dosage baseline and serve as a post-treatment reference.
Physician-administered injections
Injectable treatments are generally performed by a physician. Because Baby Botox demands an exceptionally high level of dosing precision — 0.5–2 U per point — every injection is performed 100% by Dr. Dan Xu (M.D.) personally and is never delegated to a technician.

What Is Baby Botox / Microtox?
Micro-dose Botox is a formulation of Botulinum Toxin Type AMicro-dose injection technique,By using 1–2 U per point (versus the standard 4–5 U per point), the treatment softens early dynamic lines, reduces pore size and sebum production, and maintains”Naturally youthful — not frozen in time”. This encompasses two subtypes: Baby Botox (micro-dose dynamic wrinkle treatment) and Microtox (intradermal micro-injection).
The scientific basis of Baby Botox lies in Botox®’sNon-linear dose-response curve:In the 0–4 U range, the degree of muscle inhibition is highly sensitive to dose — a 1 U change can result in a 25–30% difference in movement. The 4–15 U range behaves more linearly, while doses above 15 U enter”Full saturation”zone. Micro-dose Botox is administered within the first half of this range to achieve”30–50% softening, 50–70% movement preserved”the precise target.
Commonly used products:Botox®(most precise unit measurement),Xeomin®(protein-free formulation · preferred for long-term repeat clients),Dysport®(wider diffusion profile · less commonly used for micro-dose protocols),Letybo®(value-focused plans). Dr. Xu’s recommendations are based on each patient’s metabolism, antibody response, maintenance needs, and sensitivity to on-camera appearance.

Micro-Dose vs. Standard Botox® — A Comparison
| treatment | Baby Botox | Standard Botox |
|---|---|---|
| Glabellar dosage | 4-8 U | 20 U |
| Forehead dosage | 4-8 U | 10-16 U |
| Movement preservation | 60-85% | 10-30% |
| Duration of effect | 2.5-4 months | 4-6 months |
| Treatment sessions per year | 3-4 sessions | 2-3 sessions |
| “visibly noticeable”Risks | extremely low | Medium |
Note: A shorter duration with micro-dose Botox means more sessions per year, but each session costs less than a standard-dose treatment. Over the long term, this approach suits”Sustainable, long-term approach”type of patient.
How Micro-Dose Botox Works · Precision Micro-Dosing
Baby Botox is not”Using fewer units”,ratherMore injection points, lower dose per point, and more precise depthto achieve”Softened — but never frozen”precise aesthetic goals.
8-expression video recorded on camera
Dr. Xu records you performing 8 facial movements — frowning, raising your brows, smiling, laughing, pursing lips, wrinkling your nose, pouting, and resting — to assess the tension strength of each muscle, the dominant expressive muscles, and the degree of asymmetry. This forms the dosage baseline.
MD Codes Micro-dose protocol design
Following the MD Codes system, Dr. Xu calculates for each individual muscle”Point density × per-point dosage”. For example: glabella 5 points × 1 U instead of 5 points × 4 U; forehead 6 points × 1 U instead of 5 points × 2–3 U.
30-32 G Ultra-fine needle + low dead-space syringe
Micro-dose injections require 30–32 G ultra-fine needles paired with 0.5 mL low dead-space syringes to achieve 0.5–1 U dosing accuracy. A standard 1 mL syringe cannot reliably measure 0.5 U increments.
Intramuscular vs. intradermal depth selection
Baby Botox Standard injection depth remains intramuscular (targeting the muscle). Microtox uses a shallow intradermal injection at a 30° angle to improve pore size, sebum production, and skin texture. The two techniques differ in both injection depth and mechanism of action.
2.5-4 month maintenance + extended intervals after repeated sessions
Because the unit count is lower, neuromuscular junctions recover more quickly, resulting in a duration of 2.5–4 months (compared to 4–6 months for standard Botox). After 3–4 repeated treatments, muscle memory diminishes and duration can extend to 4–5 months, reducing annual treatment sessions from 4 to 3.
Dosing Precision — Dr. Xu’s Three Lines of Defense
The greatest technical challenge of Baby Botox is not”How many units”,ratherHow dosing precision of 0.5–1 U is ensured every time. A 0.5 U discrepancy represents a 50% margin of error, which can result in under-correction or localized stiffness.
Low dead-space syringe
0.5 mL Low dead-space syringe · dead-space residual < 0.005 mL · ensures 0.5 U precision
Standardized dilution ratio
100 U Botox Diluted to 4 mL (i.e., 2.5 U / 0.1 mL) · preferred dilution ratio for micro-dose protocols
Pre-injection dose verification
Before every injection, Dr. Xu personally verifies the dilution and drawn volume · dual verification protocol
“The real challenge of micro-dose neurotoxin treatment is not how many units to use — it is knowing which muscle needs 70% of its movement preserved and which should be softened by 50%. That level of judgment comes only from a physician who has assessed thousands of faces. No protocol can replace it.” — Dr. Dan Xu, M.D., CCFP
Am I a Candidate for Baby Botox?
Baby Botox is not”Not the right choice for everyone”. It is best suited for specific patient goals. In some cases, standard dosing is actually the more appropriate choice.
You may be a good candidate for micro-dose treatment if…
- First-time Botox clients · concerns about”visibly noticeable”
- Professional actors / TV hosts / on-camera professionals · Micro-expressions must be preserved
- Zero static lines · preventive anti-aging goals
- For “Completely frozen appearance”No interest · preference for”Natural appearance”
- 30+ Early dynamic wrinkles
- Enlarged pores / excessive oiliness (Microtox indications)
- Previously reported after standard-dose treatment”Frozen face”
- Rapid Botox® metabolism (effects diminishing within 2–3 months)
Standard dosing is more appropriate in the following situations…
- Deep static wrinkles (already”etched”on the skin)
- Masseter or trapezius treatments requiring higher unit doses
- Preference”Completely expressionless”results
- Frequent travel / unwilling to commit to maintenance every 3 months
- Budget-conscious patients who can only commit to 1–2 sessions per year
- hyperhidrosis and other high-dose functional treatments
- Pregnancy / breastfeeding
- Neuromuscular disorders
Treatment area × micro-dose vs. standard × recommended plan

| Forehead | 4-8 U | 10-16 U | Highly recommended · prevents brow ptosis |
| crow’s feet | 2-4 U / side | 8-12 U / side | Recommended · Prevents downward mouth corner pull |
| Brow lift (micro-dose) | 1-2 U / side | 4-6 U / side | Recommended · precision technique |
| Enlarged pores / excess oil (Microtox) | 10-30 U Full face | Not applicable | Microtox specialized |
| Masseter / trapezius | Not applicable | 80-200 U | Standard dosing required |

2–4 U per side, softening fan-shaped crow’s feet while preserving zygomaticus major movement during smiling, avoiding”Artificial-looking smile”.
2-4 U/side / 3 monthsEnlarged pores / excess sebum
Microtox Shallow intradermal injections at a 30° angle, approximately 30 points across the full face · 0.5–1 U per point · suppresses sebaceous gland activity to reduce pore size and oiliness.
10-30 U Full face / 3–4 monthsMicro-dose brow lift
Micro-dose 1–2 U per side to the brow depressor muscles, lifting the brow position by 1–2 mm, improving”Brow ptosis” / a tired appearance — never overdone.
1-2 U/side / 3 monthsOn-camera professional treatment plan

Baby Botox, not”Using fewer units”a compromise approach
Baby Botox is a distinct clinical technique that requires a physician to have comprehensive training in dose-response curves, high-density point placement, and low-dead-space precision control.”Halved dosage”does not equal”Baby Botox”,may simply be under-dosed. Elegant”Naturally youthful” and “Asymmetric movement / localized stiffness”the difference comes down to whether the physician truly understands the non-linear effects of micro-dosing.
As an Allergan/Juvéderm North America Official Trainer, Dr. Xu’s clinical insights on micro-dose protocols for Asian faces have become a reference standard in peer training across Canada.
About Micro-Dose Botox Pricing
Pricing for micro-dose neurotoxin treatments can vary considerably between clinics — and that difference goes far beyond how many units are used. It depends on who is assessing you, who is making the clinical judgment, and how much expertise is involved throughout the process. A well-executed treatment includes the physician’s assessment of each muscle’s strength, a precise understanding of the non-linear unit-to-effect curve, a baseline video analysis of your 8 facial movement expressions, and a thorough review of your”How much expression you want to keep”the detailed communication involved — these are medical resources, not merely”How many units were used”. The same product, under different clinical judgment, can produce vastly different levels of natural-looking results. First-time patients, on-camera professionals, and those seeking revision from another clinic”frozen face”Revision cases and those with special metabolic considerations benefit most from full physician involvement — from assessment through injection. Straightforward maintenance treatments with clearly defined goals may be suitable for a more streamlined approach. Injectable treatments at our clinic are typically performed by the physician. Your treatment should be guided by your actual clinical needs, not by price.

Baby Botox: Common Risks, Contraindications & Safety Protocols
Transparency in medical aesthetics is itself a mark of expertise and trustworthiness. Because micro-dose Botox uses lower unit counts, the likelihood of serious risks is significantly lower than with standard Botox — however, there are still reactions that clients should be informed about.
Common reactions (may occur shortly after injection)
- Redness, swelling, or pinpoint marks at injection sites(1-2 hours to resolve)
- Very mild bruising(Approximately 3–5% probability · Less likely than with standard dosing · Resolves within 3–5 days)
- Mild tightness(1-3 days · a normal sensation as the muscles begin to relax)
- Temporary headache(rare · resolves within 24–48 hours)
- “Insufficient results”(Some clients expect results comparable to standard dosing · this is a normal characteristic of micro-dose Botox)
Serious risks (rare but must be disclosed)
- Temporary ptosis (upper eyelid droop)— Extremely rare (< 0.3% · lower probability with micro-dose due to reduced dosage) · Resolves naturally within 4–6 weeks
- Facial asymmetry— Rare · can be addressed with a small touch-up at the 14-day follow-up
- Allergic reaction— Extremely rare
- Antibody formation— May still occur with long-term repeated use despite low dosing · Switching to Xeomin® is an option
- Under-effect— Some clients respond less noticeably to low dosages · a 14-day follow-up allows for touch-up dosing
Absolute contraindications (treatment not performed)
- Pregnancy / breastfeeding
- Neuromuscular disorders: myasthenia gravis / Lambert-Eaton syndrome / ALS
- Known allergy to botulinum toxin type A or human serum albumin
- Active infection, rash, or herpes simplex at the injection site
- Currently using aminoglycoside antibiotics
- Minors (under 18 years of age)
- Active fever / flu
